Safety & Verification

Why every member records a live video before they are matched

Verification is the least romantic part of joining RealVows, and the reason the rest of it works. Here is exactly what happens to those fifteen seconds.

Ask anyone who has spent a year on a mainstream dating app what they would change, and the answer is rarely the algorithm. It is that they cannot be sure the person on the other side is real, single, or the age they claim. Every hour spent on a profile that was never a genuine prospect is an hour taken from someone serious.

So we put the least popular step first. Before a profile enters the matching pool at all, the member records a short live video — a few guided prompts, fifteen seconds, done on the device in front of them. It cannot be uploaded from the camera roll, and it cannot be skipped.

What the check actually proves

Two things, and only two. First, liveness: that a present human recorded it, rather than a photograph held up to a lens or a clip pulled from social media. Second, that the face in the video is the face in the four photographs on the profile.

  • It does not assess how you look, and it is never scored.
  • It is never shown to another member, at any point, for any reason.
  • It is stored separately from your profile, encrypted, and deleted when your account closes.

What it costs us

A meaningful number of people start the process and stop at the camera. We have watched that number and decided to live with it. Every profile that leaves at this step is a profile that would have cost a serious member a week of their life.

The point of verification is not to catch bad actors. It is to make the good ones confident enough to be honest.Eleanor Whitfield, Head of Matchmaking

What it does not solve

Verification proves identity. It does not prove intent, kindness, or that someone is ready for marriage — no system can. That is what the rest of the profile, the values questions and a human reviewer are for. Treat a verified badge as a floor, never a guarantee, and take the same care meeting someone from RealVows as you would anyone else.
